Laura's daughter was born in 2014. They became a single parent household at childbirth. Laura turned to TANF, SNAP, ASPIRE, MaineCare, and WIC for survival.
Laura had bigger dreams before she had her daughter. Her mission was to support every child in the State of Maine who had developmental disabilities. But her dream seemed so far from the standpoint of welfare.
After much pain, sadness, and hardship, she decided to follow her passion in hopes to save herself. All while helping all the children she loved so much.
Black Bear Support Services was established, and providing services in February 2016. Since opening, the agency has grown to three locations in Central and Southern Maine. Supporting over 100 youth with developmental disabilities, and employing 100 people in 2019.
Our hope is for everyone involved in a child's treatment towards independence, will feel supported and celebrated every step of the way.
Our mission is to improve lives. That starts with each life we come across: Our employees, our clients and those who love and care for them, and the communities in which we serve.
